EVERY CHILD DESERVES A HEALTHY FUTURE
Healthier school lunch menus can help make that happen
MY CHILD AND EVERY CHILD
I’ve dedicated my life to making high-quality nutrition more accessible to families and communities around the world. Through my work, I’ve seen firsthand how closely food and health are related, but nothing has brought the importance of nutrition into sharper focus than becoming a mother. Becoming a mother made the fight for a healthier food system personal.
More than ever, I want for every child in Massachusetts what I want for my own child: a long, healthy life. Making that happen starts with high-quality nutrition.
That's why I founded the Massachusetts Healthy School Lunch Coalition. Together, with other parents, school leaders, public health experts, and community members, we're on a mission to make sure every child is nourished now and set up for the healthy future they deserve.

Massachusetts Healthy School Lunch Bill
The companies that serve food to our children can do better. The Massachusetts Healthy School Lunch Bill (SD1308 and HD3159), will make healthier menus the default for the 500,000 Massachusetts students who depend on school lunch each day.
"The diet-related diseases we traditionally associate with adults often begin in childhood. Policies focused on improving nutrition for children are not only vital to their health now, but can actually save lives down the road."
Dr. Michael Greger, New York Times Best Selling Author of How Not to Die
Our coalition understands that issues of health, equity, and sustainability cannot be separated or ignored. Ensuring a healthy, livable future for our children and families therefore requires immediate and collaborative efforts between government, private and public sectors, and individuals.
While there are no simple solutions, now is the time to take action, lead boldly, and show the children of Massachusetts that their future is a top priority.
OUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH IS AT STAKE
Daily consumption of typical school lunch foods, which are high in cholesterol, saturated fat, sodium, and excess calories, is not only unhealthy—it's dangerous and puts children at risk of America's top causes of death and disability.
The HSL bill calls to replace disease-promoting foods typically served for lunch with healthful whole foods, and declares every March 21st Massachusetts Child Nutrition Day to educate and empower children about healthy eating—starting with what's on their plate.
NOURISHED. HEALTHY. SUCCESFUL.
Every child in Massachusetts deserves nutritious and health-promoting foods that set them up for success in school and life. That's why the Massachusetts Healthy School Lunch Coalition (MHSLC) is bringing together students, parents, teachers, school leaders, nutrition and sustainability experts, and policymakers to work for the healthy future every child deserves.

WHY SCHOOL LUNCH?
Because so many children depend on school meals to meet their daily nutritional needs, school food matters more than most people realize. Unfortunately, even when meals meet federal nutrition standards, they are still disease-promoting. Improving school food is a powerful opportunity to prioritize health, equity, and environmental justice for all children.
Help us align school lunch with your values. See for yourself the kind of foods being served to children every day, then send a message to your legislator demanding change.
ABOUT THE COALITION
The Massachusetts Healthy School Lunch Coalition (MHSLC) was founded in 2020 with a hunger to secure the healthy, equitable, and liveable future all children deserve. We believe that school nutrition and food purchasing are powerful opportunities for achieving that vision.
MHSLC brings together students, parents, educators, nutrition and sustainability experts, and policymakers to advance our shared vision of healthy school food for all. We'd love for you to join us!
